Glasgow Central

Welcome to my new website. I have recently been selected (by a democratic ballot of all party members within Glasgow) as the Scottish Liberal Democrats' prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC) for the constituency of Glasgow Central. This means that, failing incident, I will be the candidate at the General Election on 7 May 2015, ready to be sent to Westminster.

To be honest, as I tend to be, I am not expecting to be elected next year. In fact, being elected would seriously muck up my life at the moment (as I retrain for a new career in science). However, I am not involved in politics for my own convenience! There are many things in life more fun than writing documents, knocking on doors and delivering leaflets; I am involved in politics for the same reasons most people have for getting involved in their communities, because I want to make a positive difference and I believe I can do that.

A vote for me is not just a vote for a political party but I do stand under a political banner. However imperfect all political parties are, they remain the principal vehicle for delivering legislative change, holding the executive to account and actually forming a functional government. Unlike single-issue groups (many of which I support), political parties are (or should be) required to juggle lots of competing priorities and potentially conflicting policies, crucially having to balance the budget so the country does not end up collapsing in international debt. Compromises have to be made at every turn; facts hide and change; not every decision will be right first time.

I joined the Liberal Democrats because I shared the fundamental principles enshrined in its constitution: liberty, equality and community, working towards freedom from poverty, ignorance and conformity. I stand by these guiding principles, along with a commitment to environmental sustainability and an open skepticism that demands that policy be based on evidence.

I would not be standing if I couldn't do the job, and do it effectively – using a broad range of skills and experience and in my own distinctive style; if on balance you trust my judgement, please do vote for me if you are eligible.

Quick facts:

Professionally, I have been a lawyer, administrator, writer and entertainer. I have recently embarked on an MChem in Chemistry with Drug Discovery at the University of Strathclyde.
